Deputy Don McGlothlin was assigned as Deerfield Townships DARE officer and CRIME PREVENTION officer in 2002. Approximately 250 children from Columbia Elementary and St Margaret of York graduated from the DARE program in 2003. Don was instrumental in implementing a DARE program for home schooled children in Warren County. This was later found to be the first of its kind in the nation. The Sheriff's Office was recognized by DARE Ohio for that achievement. In addition to DARE, there were 41 community events attended by Deputy McGlothlin. These events included programs for all ages.
At the beginning of 2001, Township officers along with Chief William Kramer (laison officer between Deerfield Township and the Sheriff's Office) participated in the development of a master plan that would set goals to be accomplished by the end of the year. A master plan is now developed at the beginning of every year. Thoughts and ideas are received from all officers and a master plan is developed using their input.
The Deerfield Post also has a bike patrol unit consisting of five officers. Sergeant Doug Wheatley oversees the operations of the bike units. The bike patrol is used to patrol the residential and business areas of the township. They are also assigned to special events throughout the year such as Deerfield Day and Grad Nights.
The Township Trustees requested a more detailed quarterly report as to the activity of the Deputies assigned to Deerfield. Since January, 2001, the Trustees have been supplied with the additional information that they requested including total number arrests of adults and juveniles, number of traffic citations, total calls for service, response times and a comparison of activity between Deerfield units and the County road patrol units. Lieutenant Petrey is currently developing a better reporting system for the Township Trustees.
Four new patrol units were purchased in 2003. The vehicle that was utilized for the commercial vehicle enforcement unit was totaled in March. Its replacement, a 2003 Ford F-250, was put into operation at the end of September. This unit weighed a total of 113 vehicles and issued 73 overweight citations as well as 50 other citations for other violations despite being out of service for nearly six months.
