WebCheck is Ohio's new civilian background check program that decreases the opportunity for child molesters and other felons to harm children and other vulnerable Ohio citizens. This innovative technology, WebCheck, as its name suggests, allows the state to use the World Wide Web as a means to conduct civilian background checks for agencies such as schools nursing homes, and day-care centers.

Since 1993, State Statutes have required background checks for applicants seeking employment in many occupations. Those individuals that are required to have background checks before gaining employment include insurance agencies, individuals who work with children, and people who work with the elderly. Civilian background checks have become a large part of the BCI&I workload, increasing from 38,000 checks in 1992 to more than 450,000 in 1998. Though there may be exceptions, WebCheck should be the background check solution in most situations.

WebCheck is playing a key role in lowering the risk of violence in our schools by providing timely and accurate information to those who work with our children and other vulnerable citizens of Ohio.
