JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under direction, ensures security of the correctional facility; monitors surveillance equipment and behavior of inmates; processes persons who are to be admitted to and released from the facility; maintains logs and other required documents; provides necessary services to inmates.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of training and work experience which indicates possession of the skills, knowledge and abilities listed above. An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:
- High school diploma or equivalent; and verifiable training, education, or experience which indicates and ability to maintain activity logs and related records; must successfully complete interview and background process (including a psychological evaluation) and physical evaluation (upon conditional offer of employment.)
LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Ohio driver's license; valid Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission Basic Corrections certificate (may be obtained after employment); valid ODH Datamaster certificate (may be obtained after employment); current LEADS certification (may be obtained after employment).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
| 80% | (1) Under direction, monitors inmates and overall security of the facility (e.g., inner and outer perimeter security, control panel, weapons control, etc.); processes persons who are to be admitted to and released from the facility (e.g., inmate booking and classification processes, etc.); arranges and verifies inmate attendance at court proceedings and video arraignments, work release programs, sick call, medical and dental appointments, inmate services activities, etc.; uses approved restraint devices (e.g., handcuffs, leg shackles, restraint chair, etc.) to restrain and secure inmates; completes required reports (e.g., activity reports, logs, investigations reports, etc.); maintains good working relationships with co-workers, members of other agencies, the community, and the media. |
| 10% | (2) Operates LEADS computer to obtain criminal history checks and records; operates BAC Datamaster or other approved breath testing equipment; conducts inner and perimeter security checks; monitors surveillance equipment(e.g., cameras, etc.). |
| 10% | (3) Provides information to inmates regarding facility operations and inmate rules of conduct; enforces inmate discipline consistent with jail standards, agency policy, and due process requirements; may serve (execute) civil or criminal process on inmates. |

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: (*indicates developed after employment)
Knowledge of: law enforcement computer system (hardware and software) operation and maintenance; Sheriff's Office goals and objectives; relevant state statutes and administrative code rules (e.g., minimum standards, etc.) relative to the operation of full service jails, safety practices and procedures; Sheriff's Office policies and procedures; correctional facility policies and procedures.
Skill in: typewriter and computer system operation (e.g., personal computer, LEADS terminal, etc); use of security equipment related to the operations of the correctional facility; use of restraint devices; use of blood alcohol testing equipment.
Ability to: define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; prepare and maintain accurate reports; recognize unusual or threatening situations and take appropriate action; exercise independent judgment; understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, or regulations to specific situations; compile and prepare reports, communicate effectively (orally and in writing; interpret a variety of written, electronic, and verbal communications; handle sensitive inquiries from and contacts with officials and the general public; physically apprehend, restrain, and subdue persons; calculate fractions, decimals, and percentages; demonstrate physical endurance and agility.

ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and tissue.
- Occasional exposure to physical harm by hostile inmates, prisoners, or other persons.
- Occasional necessity for extreme physical exertion in order to subdue or restrain individuals.
- May be exposed to criminals or violent persons.
